The University of Glasgow Azerbaijan Alumni Association (UGAAA) hosted a Burns Night event on the 17th of February at the Shirvanshah Hotel.

The University of Glasgow Azerbaijan Alumni Association (UGAAA) hosted a Burns Night event on the 17th of February at the Shirvanshah Hotel. This special night was dedicated to the memory of the great Scottish poet Robert Burns. Farid Nasirli, President of the UGAAA, opened the event with a speech, noting that the organization was established on November 18, 2023. One of its main missions is to further strengthen relations between graduates and the importance of building a network via community.

Atir Guliyeva, Vice President of the UGAAA, shared information about the legacy of Robert Burns, who was a champion of the common man, a critic of social injustice, and a voice for the downtrodden.

Nargiz Mammadova, Media Manager of the UGAAA, discussed the history and stunning architecture of the University of Glasgow, which spans over five centuries, making it the second-oldest university in Scotland and the fourth oldest in the English-speaking world.

The opening continued with the reading of poems by Robert Burns and the works of Mirza Shafi Vazeh, a prominent Azerbaijani poet who lived in the 18th and 19th centuries. Their poems were recited by the writer and poet Ulviyya Akhundova, poet and writer, international award winner Leyli Salayeva.

In the second part of the Burns Night, a Kahoot was held among our guests. Excitement, competitiveness, and fun games led to winners, who were presented with gifts provided by Hazel Azerbaijan and Herba Flora. At the the event, a memory picture was taken with our esteemed guests.

Guests were able to network, enjoy an exclusive open buffet dinner, and experience Scottish culture together.
