My name is Sariyya Zeynalova. I completed my MSc in Petroleum Geoscience at the University of Manchester in 2023. Currently, I am working as a petrophysicist at Umid-Babek Operating Company (UBOC), and I’ve been in this role for a year.
2. What advice would you give to someone looking to pursue a career in petroleum geoscience today? Are there specific skills or experiences you think are critical to success in this field?
My advice is to be proactive and make the most of your university years. A high GPA is important, but it’s just the beginning. You need to understand how the industry operates and build a strong foundation in your chosen area of focus, whether it’s geology, reservoir engineering, or geophysics.
Practical experience is key—internships, summer schools, and professional courses through organizations like SEG or SPE can give you an edge. Familiarity with industry-standard software like Petrel and Techlog is a significant advantage, and coding skills, especially Python, are increasingly valuable.
3. What was your favorite thing about living in Manchester during your studies? Were there any places or activities that you particularly enjoyed?
Manchester was the perfect place to balance study and life. The University of Manchester provided a strong foundation with its technical training, while the city itself was a hub of vibrant experiences. Although smaller than cities like London, Manchester had everything you could need, catering to all kinds of interests and hobbies.
One of my personal highlights was learning to play badminton with international students—it became a regular and enjoyable activity. I also took on new challenges, like hiking in the Peak District, which was both difficult and rewarding. These experiences really enriched my time there.
What made Manchester special was its diversity in atmosphere and culture. The city offered a mix of everything: cozy cafes, historic and industrial architecture, and beautiful green spaces like parks and canals. Each part of Manchester had its own unique vibe. For example, the Northern Quarter is a haven for creative and artistic people, with its bohemian vibe and quirky cafes. The Manchester City Centre is the heartbeat of the city, perfect for first-timers exploring iconic landmarks and shopping. Meanwhile, Deansgate is a hotspot with plenty of bars, pubs, restaurants.
Whether you wanted to relax, be active, or socialize, Manchester had something for everyone. Its mix of history, culture, nature, and entertainment made it an unforgettable place to live and study.
4. Were you involved in any student clubs or activities that enhanced your university experience?
Although I wasn’t an active member of any specific societies, I took full advantage of the networking events and university-organized trips to other cities. These opportunities allowed me to connect with a diverse range of people from different countries and backgrounds.
5. Manchester’s location makes it easy to explore other parts of the UK and Europe. Did you get a chance to travel while studying in Manchester? What was your favorite place to visit?
Absolutely! One of the best things about Manchester is its excellent connectivity, making it easy to explore other parts of the UK. I had the opportunity to visit many places, especially within England, and one of the most memorable experiences was a summer field trip to the south of England. We explored the Wessex Basin to learn about the petroleum systems of the UK, focusing on reservoirs, source rocks, and more. It was a one-week trip packed with valuable geological insights and hands-on learning.
During this trip, I visited places like Portland, Bridport, Lyme Regis, Durdle Door, Exmouth, and Weymouth. Portland and Lyme Regis were particularly memorable for their stunning beaches and fossil-rich cliffs, while Durdle Door stood out with its iconic limestone arch and breathtaking views. Exmouth and Weymouth offered a charming seaside atmosphere, with sunny weather adding to the overall experience.
This combination of exploring nature, learning geology, and experiencing the beauty of these locations made the trip truly special and one of the highlights of my time in the UK
